The Apostolakis family's anise-free tsipouro is the perfect accompaniment to traditional delicacies and fish dishes. The local tradition and distillation process dates back to 1922, when refugees from Asia Minor settled in Nea Ionia. Those refugees stayed true to their old customs and lifestyle, so after work they gathered in houses and taverns, called "tsipouradika", where they drank the traditional tsipouro from Smyrna. The tsipouro was distilled at home with great care and passion. Over time, locals also joined them and were gradually initiated into the secret recipes and preparation methods. Today, tsipouro is considered the traditional drink of the region and is the perfect complement to seafood delicacies. Tsipouradika, created about a century ago, is still a meeting place for all kinds of people.
