Kokinisto, stew with tomato sauce

You can make this dish with chicken or lamb.


Ingredients for 4 persons:
  • 1 kg beef in coarse pieces
  • 1 packet of pomodoro tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato puree
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 700 ml water
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Pinch of cinnamon, cloves and / or allspice
  • Small amount of freshly grated nutmeg


  1. Bring a pan with plenty of water to the boil, add the pieces of meat and bring to the boil. Drain the meat and pat it dry a little.
  2. Heat a little olive oil in the pan and fry the meat until it is slightly browned. Add salt and pepper.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion, add the tomato puree and fry for 1 minute. Add the pomodoro tomatoes together with 700 ml water. Add all the spices and bring the sauce to the boil. Add the beef and stew it for about 1.5 to 2 hours on low heat, until it is cooked and falls apart a little.
  4. Stir regularly during the cooking process.
  5. Serve with this dish pasta, rice or, in winter, mashed potatoes. A Nemea Lantides red wine is an excellent match for this dish.
