Tsipouro

Tsipouro is a distilled drink obtained from the remains of grape musts. In Macedonia and Thessaly, tsipouro is distilled by various cooperatives and sometimes also at home. It can vary in strength from 30% to 60%. Tsipouro is a surprisingly clear and pure drink. To add flavour, bunches of herbs are used in the distillation. Drink tsipouro as an aperitif.

How do you drink Tsipouro?

Feel like having a drink yourself? Tsipouro is often drunk quietly, accompanied by small snacks. These are also called Mezedes in Greece. Some good accompaniments are squid, sardines, fried courgettes, Greek salad, olives, feta cheese and, in fact, all Greek meals. Tsipouro is indispensable during your holidays in Greece and your visit to a taverna. Tsipouro can also be shot, but beware: our Tsipouro's have an alcohol percentage of about 35%.

How Tsipouro is made

The basic ingredient of Tsipouro is the remains of grapes after wine has been made from them. These are mainly grape remnants such as skins and stalks. The drink tastes different on Mykonos, Crete and in Volos because of the different grape varieties used. Because the harvest of the grapes lasts only a limited number of weeks each year, that is also the only time in which Tsipouro can be made. The ingredients are kept secret and passed on from generation to generation. Tsipouro is the most consumed drink on the mainland of Greece.
